NBA : Naismith invented the sport of basketball in 1891 while working as a physical education instructor at the YMCA in Springfield, Mass.
Naismith wrote the original 13 rules of basketball (originally called “basket ball”) and went on to found the University of Kansas basketball program in 1898.
In 1935, a 74-year old Naismith was able to witness the introduction of basketball as an official sports program in the 1936 Summer Olympic Games in Berlin.
Today, basketball is played by more than 300 million people worldwide, making it one of the most popular team sports.
